The Latino Partnership

Among recent efforts to recruit conservative Hispanic voters in the United States, “Latino Partnership” stands out as an initiative put into effect by the American Principles Project. This particular initiative attempts to channel the conservative Hispanic vote that is so necessary to maintain conservatives’ and Hispanics’ traditional values and principles. At present, the Republican Party is in a great place to represent Hispanic voters in local, state and national elections.

One of the great myths of our times is that American Hispanics are Democrats, when in truth they have more in common with conservative ideology. Even so, Democratic political campaigns have been up until now, with a few exceptions, more diligent and effective in attracting the Hispanic vote; a voter population that is better informed, more objective, less prone to manipulation, and more independent. This is good news for conservative politicians because a growing number of Hispanic voters are going to support those initiatives that truly respond to the needs and values of the American public

The Latino Partnership campaign recalls truths that other interest groups try to hide: A great majority of Hispanics in this country share conservative principles that have demonstrated their efficiency and societal cohesion throughout history; these are good and positive principles that some sectors try to limit in support of alternative life-styles that can only result in the destruction of traditional societal and family values and an excessive invasion of privacy and individual liberties by the government. These are principles like the essential commitment to hard and professional work; a sense of individual responsibility that guides people’s lives, without the government tutelage, as well as providing the independence that makes the creation of new businesses and wealth and cultural diversity possible; the loyal commitment to family and the sanctity of human life; the principle of non-interference and limited government in children’s education in subjects like sexuality or abortion; the principle of a limited government that leaves room for individual and community action.

The Latino Partnership’s contribution to the defense of these principles and values brings us to the United States’ tradition of citizens’ active participation in democracy. With the support of the Latino Partnership, the conservative movement that unites millions of Hispanics’ values, will encourage the election of conservative candidates and the support of conservative causes by Hispanics and in return, hopes to increase the national conservative movement’s support of Hispanic groups and candidates, as well as causes and legal projects that are beneficial to Latinos.

For example, one of the Latino Partnership’s most interesting causes for Hispanics is migratory reform. This reform would legalize undocumented workers after the payment of a fine, reinforce American borders, promote legalized immigrants’ assimilation, and create a temporary worker program to regularize immigrants’ work under optimal conditions. This is a leadership initiative in crucial topic with a budget of half a million dollars from APP. The project focuses on providing financial support to conservative candidates that are in favor of reforms in the “ Colorado, for Governor and the Senate; New Mexico and Nevada” campaigns. And this is only the beginning.

Immigration is key to capturing the Hispanic vote. But Hispanics shouldn’t forget that it was conservative presidents, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, who proposed reasonable migratory reforms that would benefit all citizens, immigrants and the nation as a whole. Additionally, it is conservatives like Sarah Palin, among others, who consider migratory reform a priority in their political platforms, who propose realistic reform without manipulative posturing for public opinion.

With Hispanics making up 15 percent of the American population, and 40 percent of those Hispanics participating as active voters and one in four U.S. births of Hispanic origin, the Latino vote is key for the election of future political candidates and public servants. Channeling this flow of citizens and voters towards the conservative movement, a movement in line with Hispanic values, must be a priority not only for the Latino Partnership, but also for the Republican Party, that must recover an electorate with which it connects on basic principles.

The work ahead is arduous because misinformation has been intense for years. Hispanic voters must see their community and individual goals reflected in conservative candidates and initiatives. Conservative candidates are up to the challenge. To start, it’s very positive that genuine conservatives like Grover Norquist, “Americans for Tax Reform” president, have publicly supported the launch of the Latino Partnership. A responsible ideological commitment from Hispanics and conservatives working towards shared values that together we will know how to better defend.
