The “Entre Comadres” Program

Something that distinguishes the United States from other countries is the successful integration of market, business, companies, society and technology. A particularly innovative program is the “ Entre Comadres” program, put into effect by Procter & Gamble (P&G), the producers of Tide, Downy and Gillette, in collaboration with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). This program funds centers where free technological resources are made available to Hispanic women. The program offers Latinas, one of the sectors that has the most to gain from increased access to technological resources, classes, the use of computers, and training in new technologies. Centers are open all year long and courses are organized in function of the needs of each local community.

With an economy in transition, that is swiftly changing production and business methods, computer technology training and new technologies are keys to future employability and progress for millions of individuals. Additionally, knowledge of these resources will allow millions of recent immigrants to master vital skills so that they and their families can become better integrated into mainstream American Society, and access the world of opportunities that the country can provide.
In addition to computer training, “Entre Comadres” will also offer classes in ESL, personal finance and other subjects that can help Hispanic women to better develop their potential.
The “Entre Comadres” program centers are located in Dallas, and Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California, within LULAC’s current community installations; Program centers have classrooms equipped with computers with Internet access, printers, video conference equipment, telecommunications equipment, etc. Classes offered vary depending on the center and are taught by LULAC professors using software and advanced studies plans. Each center has a bilingual coordinator that is responsible for personalizing the experience of each participant and guiding them throughout the course. Participants can register in as many available courses as they like without limitations. Although the free courses are prepared for and focused on Hispanic women, any member of the community that would like to may participate as well.

Hispanic women play a decisive role in their families and communities, and because of this, strengthening their training in technologies is an efficient way for businesses and charitable organizations to positively influence the Hispanic community’s development and preparation. This training will not only further educate Latina women, but will increase their opportunities for better jobs. In this way, the program contributes not only to these women’s social and economic success but also to that of their families. In this way, responsible businesses allied with organizations like LULAC set out to help people with employment and resources for success, keeping families and communities united, and distancing them from problems with gangs, drugs, marginalization, alcohol, and the destruction of values, etc.
The “Entre Comadres” program demonstrates yet again that the union of business, society and technology is the most effective tool for progress when it is made available to everyone.
