La buena música western afortunadamente sigue muy viva y tenemos numerosos y buenos artistas para comprobarlo. Ya he comentado en el blog el legado inmenso que dejó Marty Robbins y el trabajo que está realizando Michael Martin Murphey para seguir la tradición más pura de los cowboys. Hoy quiero compartir con todos los buenos aficionados que saben reconocer y disfrutar lo realmente bueno la música de The Sons of the San Joaquin, que hacen auténtica música country & western, lejos de los circuitos comerciales masivos y sólo para los verdaderos amantes del género. No hay en ellos nada de esas aposturas artificiales y políticamente correctas que venden las grandes discográficas ni una gota de ese sonido adulterado que inunda las estaciones de radio actuales. O sea, para entendernos, esto es puro country & western, sin chorradas ni remilgos de ningún tipo.
The Sons of the San Joaquin es un trío formado por los hermanos Jack y Joe Hannah (de Missouri) y el hijo de Joe, Lon (de California), quien convenció a los tres hermanos a finales de los ochenta, concretamente en 1987, para que formaran un trío de los buenos. Sus vidas están impregnadas del auténtico espíritu cowboy y su influencia musical es la tradicional música western que popularizaron en su día grupos tan legendarios como Sons of the Pioneers en las décadas de los treinta, cuarenta y cincuenta del siglo XX. De hecho, otra leyenda como Roy Rogers dijo de ellos que: “son el único grupo vivo que siento que suenan como los originales Sons of the Pioneers”.

Joe Hannah acostumbra a llevar la voz cantante y Lon, que es tenor, y Jack, barítono, hacen los coros. Es destacable la labor de Jack en la composición de temas que conectan perfectamente con la mejor tradición western. Desde los noventa se dedican profesionalmente a la música y han revigorizado esta corriente musical. Después de un par de álbumes editados de forma independiente, dieron el salto en los 90 al sello que creó la Warner especializado en música western, supervisado por Michael Martin Murphey, quien los descubrió en un Festival de Poesía Vaquera.
The Sons of the San Joaquin han sabido mantener vivos los sonidos western y su música destila calidad en estado puro, riqueza argumental y sonora, suena nueva pero con lo mejor de la herencia cowboy. Ellos fueron inducidos al Western Music Association Hall of Fame en el año 2006 y algunos de sus álbumes han sido premiados por el National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (Cowboy Hall of Fame).
